Yay so you just found out you are expecting? Congratulations this time is magical and nerve wracking yet full of deep loving emotions and joy! I’m sure you have so many questions running through your head, especially if this is your first. As you plan and prepare for the little one to come, remember to soak in these pregnancy memories. 9 months seems like a long time when you’re in it yourself, but it FLIES by! I always am SO bummed when my clients tell me they regret not doing a maternity session on their first. It is most definitely a time you want documented. So, without further ado, I am giving you my How to guide on preparing for maternity photos!
Do Your Research
Once you find out you are pregnant, start researching photographers who’s style you love. I suggest going with a photography style/ experience versus price point. My reasoning behind this is because this time when you are growing a life is incredibly special and it deserves the best experience and best results. I would be a millionaire if I was given a dollar for every unpleasant photography experience I have heard. So interview those photographers and find the right fit for you. You deserve amazing maternity pictures!
Begin the Booking Process
You will want to book your maternity session 3-4 months in advance. My sweet spot for photographing maternity is between 33-35 weeks. So be sure to reach out to your desired photographer to book your session around 13-17 weeks.
Begin Styling
Once your session is booked it is time to start planning wardrobe. My fave part! Here are my tips for styling, and when to start styling:
- Do not pick an outfit early on in your pregnancy, as you don’t know how much you will grow. I suggest around 29/30 weeks to start shopping.
- If you are investing a lot in your session be sure to do your research about what your photographer has to offer. For instance, I offer a full wardrobe for mamas. This takes the additional expense out and gives guidance to my clients. They are able to see a dress they loved a different mama wear in a maternity session, and wear it for theirs!
- If you are expecting your 1st, feel free to wear two outfits (we have the time). If you already have kids stick to one outfit so that your family doesn’t melt during the session! It’s hard to keep them smiling and focused especially if you pause.
Preparing the Day of For Your Maternity Pictures
Prepping for day of session, make sure that you stay hydrated and well rested. I know the rested part can be a bit far fetched at 33-35 weeks but do your best to not do too much.
Pamper yourself- book that hair and makeup appt. Get your nails done, get a massage! Because girlfriend You deserve it!
Plan a couple of bagged snacks if you have little ones to keep them satisfied on the drive to and from the shooting location.
When you arrive at your session just relax, be you and have fun! Leave the alter ego at the car and show up authentically so that your photos are artful and memorable.
After Your Maternity Session
Now that your session is done, sit back and relax while your photographer turns those images into art!
Don’t forget to print all of your photos! Not only will it warm your heart to see it hanging on a wall, but it will also warm your child’s heart when they are 5 and are so very curious of everything.
